Sunday Bandstand 3 February 2024

In 1880 "The War Cry" printed Colonel William Pearson's song "Marching to Zion" using as a chorus words by Dr Robert Lowry and adopted by the Salvation Army. Whether 1880 or 1978 (when our recording was produced) marching demands the type of music for which the Army's brass bands have become famous.

The Portsmouth Citadel Band under its distinguished and respected conductor Harold Nobes, is a favourite amongst Salvation Army bands. On this show we feature a march written by Leslie Condon ' Bognor Regis'. This was written for the 'Holiday Plus Fellowship Week' held in Bognor Regis in 1968 and became its signature march. The illustration is the cover for the long playing record "March to Glory" which the band recorded in 1978 which features "Bognor Regis".
