Brighouse & District Heritage Newseum - Get your copy on June 21

The first issue of the new 'Brighouse & District Heritage Newseum' magazine is almost finished and we can say that it will be on sale from the 21st June 2018.

The photograph is taken from Anchor Bridge looking towards what is now Thornton Square and was previously Holroyd Buildings prior to it demolition 1912 / 1913. This photograph is dated c1906. On the immediate left is the ironmongers John Francis Brown's. To a new generation of Brighouse residents from the 1980s this shop was known as Oddjobs. In this first issue we have the story from when John Francis Brown bought two cottages in Bethel Street and once he had developed them this was the business that many Brighouse residnets would come to know. The business grew rapidly once the business was moved to the familar Briggate site. The story ends with an interview with John Summerskill who sold the business in April and plans to retire.

This new publication to begin with is A4, 16 inner and 4 outer pages and will be priced at £3.75. It will also be available as a digital copy as well as  postal copies with postage and packaging of £1.30

Copies will also be available from the following outlets to begin with: Harrison Lords, Bradford Road; Kitson's Newsagents, Commercial Street; Kershaw's Garden Centre, Halifax Road; Colin's Newsagents, Hipperholme and Bailiff Bridge Post Office, Co-operative Buildings. Publicty is going to be widespread primarily through The Grapevine magazine, the ever popular and professional free publication that is delivered to 17,500 households. It will be also be featuring in the local free magazine at Bailiff Bridge along with publicity in newspapers and local radio.

The magazine is going to grow both in content and interest from local people as well as expats who may now live far and wide around the world, but would like to read about the town they remember. The modest 16 inner page start is gradually going to expand up to 24 pages.

I look forward to hearing from readers just as I did when I was writing the nostalgia section for the Brighouse Echo. If you have a story or a photograph or memories you would like to share I would really like to hear from you. I am working on a drop off point where if you want to save the postage you will be able to drop it in central location.  As well as being able to write to me at: Tower House, Holme Mews, Wakefield Road, Lightcliffe, Halifax HX3 8TY.

I am planning to have this as a quarterly publication and anyone who would like to order the first four issues can do for £20.

The back page of the publication is where I will be having books for sale. Yes, initally these are all books I have written, but the second issue will feature another writer from Brighouse who wrote a fascinating story about J.R.Gregson and a book from an Elland writer. All the books on sale can be purchased on my on-line shop.  If you have a book / film / CD and would like to feature it I would be very pleased to hear from you.

I am currently also working on updating this website to comply with the new GDPR new regulations and a new privacy policy.
