This photograph was taken at the Whitworth Historical Society Museum with the Councillor Trevor Unsworth, and his wife Ann, the Mayor and Mayoress of Rossendale.

My presentation on Wednesday 4 May was to a full house and was titled ‘...Legends of the Brass Band World...’ and featured slides, music and a comprehensive commentary about two brass band greats - Cornet players Derek Garside, principal cornet at the C W S (Manchester) Band and Arthur Laycock the principal cornet player at the St Hilda’s Colliery Band.

A good night was had by all.....

This photograph was taken with Mrs Ann Davinson, the speaker secretary for the Howden and District Women’s Luncheon Club during my recent visit to give a presentation to the 80 ladies present.

“ Dear Chris, it was good to see you again and thank you for providing such an interesting story to entertain us. As an ex-librarian I share your enthusiasm for research and the many paths it can lead us down. All our members enjoyed the unravelling of your mystery tale ”.

Many of the regular listeners to my weekly Sunday Bandstand brass band radio programme on www.phoenixfm.co.uk have been asking for details of the show’s weekly play list.

I am now pleased to announce that the weekly play list is now available on the Sunday Bandstand page link and at the bottom of that page you can click directly onto the play list page. I will be displaying and maintaining lists for up to three weeks.

If anyone does miss a play list and would like the one they have missed, I will send it to you if you contact me via e-mail bandstand@chrishelme.org.uk

I will also be introducing a new feature on the programme which will involve you the listener. All I want from you are your three favourite pieces of brass band music, please be mindful the show is only one hour long. E-mail me the titles and why you have chosen them and please send me some biographical notes about yourself. Whilst we have many listeners here in the Halifax area my first listener featured is a playing member of a brass band in Japan and tells me that he rarely misses his weekly dose of Sunday Bandstand.

To be part of this new feature contact me now........

TWO NEW FEATURES ON SUNDAY BANDSTAND

Dear Chris - Many thanks for your excellent talk last Tuesday (31 May 2011) on the Sunny Vale Pleasure Gardens. It is incredible to think that such a modest entertainment proved so popular - but of course the Gardens flourished in the days before television, etc. As I walk round Wilton Park in Batley, enjoying my ice cream, I bring to mind the gentleman in his Sunday best, immersed in pond water, with the lollies in his pocket!
Please do include my e-mail address in your list for future subscribers for the next issue of your Speaker Directory. Your current one has proved invaluable and I therefore look forward to the new one.
Yours sincerely
Ian J. Harms  (Speaker Secretary - The Probus Club of Batley)
