LOCAL HISTORY BOOKS
The books on the following list are in some cases only available from the Reference Libraries. However, you may be able to find the odd one or two at Antiquarian Book Fairs but be prepared because they can be very expensive.Do not rule out visits to Car Boot Sales or even bric-a-brac stalls, you never know your luck.
Another excellent source is www.abebooks.com they will have at least 50 million books on offer through a huge network of world wide book dealers – and yes, I have bought local books on Brighouse and Elland from second hand book shops in both Canada and France. The one from Canada was cheaper than one in Huddersfield even with the weighted postage.
1. 'The History of Brighouse, Rastrick and Hipperholme', with Manorial notes on Coley, Lightcliffe, Northowram, Shelf, Fixby, Clifton and Kirklees. By J. Horsfall Turner, Published in 1893. To a collector this book in good condition could cost £25 - £50. However it was re-produced several years ago and could be purchased for £15.00 but is not available even so soon after its publication. In 2002 I heard of a reasonable copy of this publication being sold over the Internet for £89.
